John wanted to guest blog on my food blog. I told him he could do the cooking, but (and I mean no disrespect) I am the better writer, and the better photographer (believe it or not) so I'd do the actual blogging.
Last week as John was helping out with the errands, one of his stops happened to be at Costco. Sometimes they have traveling displays there with an actual salesman pitching his wares. It's like watching a live version of The Home Shopping Network. I've seen blenders, chocolate, purses, giant framed pictures, curling irons, etc. Sometimes they can be pretty ruthless, and I try to avoid eye contact.
Apparently on the day John was there they were selling sausage. All sorts of different kinds. Not your average breakfast sausage either. I would have steered clear, but John came home with a package of English Bangers. It was actually a pretty good deal. It was a good thing he went instead of I, we would have missed out.
In his enthusiasm John planned a meal around his English Bangers. Most of a meal anyway, we couldn't figure out what kind of vegetables they eat in England besides potatoes. So we had bangers and mash, and for dessert- bread pudding.
John did what he does best and got online and found what looked to be a really good recipe (http://www.grouprecipes.com/) then enlisted my help with some of the things he had less experience in. Like when the recipe called for nutmeg, and I pulled out the real thing instead of the jarred kind and grated it up there on the spot. I'd been looking for an excuse to pull out that little guy for awhile now.
Bread pudding
Pudding:
• 4 cups cubed white bread crumbs
• 1/2 cup raisins
• 2 cups milk
• 1/4 cup butter
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 2 eggs (beaten)
• 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. For pudding, in a large bowl, combine bread crumbs and raisins.
In a small saucepan, combine milk and 1/4 cup butter.
Cook over medium heat until butter is melted, 4 to 7 minutes.
Pour milk mixture over bread; let stand 10 minutes.
Stir in remaining pudding ingredients. Pour into greased 9x9-inch casserole pan.
Bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until set in center.
Vanilla Sauce:
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
• 1/2 cup whipping cream
• 1/2 cup butter
• 1 tsp. vanilla
For vanilla sauce, in small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup sugar, brown sugar, whipping cream and 1/2 cup butter.
Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens and comes to a full boil, 5 to 8 minutes.
Stir in 1 tsp. vanilla.
Serve sauce over warm pudding.
Store in refrigerator.
Makes 6 servings.
